Otakubaloo Stage - Toronto Congress CentreJoin us for a workshop on the traditional Japanese martial art of drawing the sword. Iaido (pronounced EE - EYE - DOH) has over 400 hundred years of history and focuses on proper etiquette, posture, discipline, and attention to detail. During the workshop, a limited number of audience members will be provided a bokken (wooden sword) to experience first-hand the art of Iaido. Everyone will also be able to watch demonstrations of Japanese swordsmanship from members of our dojo, including members of Team Canada Iaido.
Our workshop consists of 4 parts:
- a quick discussion on what Iaido is about, and how it compares to other similar martial arts;
- audience participation where we select some audience members to try Iaido by providing them with a wooden sword (bokken) and we will teach basic moves (stances, movements, basic cutting technique, etc.);
- applying the basic moves into a choreographed set (a "kata"); and
- a demonstration of select katas from members of our dojo.
