Dubs that Time Forgot
Old home video releases, older pilot episodes, oldest movie reels ... anime's been present in the English-speaking world for 50 years, but most of it has fallen through the cracks. For every home video and TV hit, there are dozens that sit for decades, waiting to be rediscovered. Join Mike Toole and Dave Merrill for a fascinating look at the secret history of anime ... in English!
It started with a comic about war called Senjo Manga (Battlefield Comics). From there, artist Leiji Matsumoto captivated the world with the likes of Star Blazers, Captain Harlock, and Galaxy Express 999. Never content to rest on his laurels, Matsumoto has defined and re-defined his heroes and stories over and over again; old fans revere him for his classic space opera, and new fans love him for his work with Daft Punk. But what does Leiji Matsumoto's body of work look like, and how is it all connected? Come and find out!
Anime Cult Classics
A fascinating exploration of little-known, unappreciated, and oddly entertaining anime... anime produced by cults, that is! From the Sokka Gakkai's bizarre shorts to the Institute for Research in Human Happiness's big-budget HERMES: WINGS OF LOVE feature film, and to the anime produced by (and starring) Shoko Ashara, who would go on to orchestrate the chilling 1994 Tokyo subway bombing, we'll explore a cross-section of TRUE "cult anime."
Sometimes a certain anime gets really popular, which leads to cheap imitations. Sometimes these ideas head overseas, leading anime concepts, character designs, and story details to suddenly and illegally pop up in South Korean and Chinese animation and western comics. These unintended influences lead to wonderful and genuinely
baffling stuff - stuff like SPACE GUNDAM V, JOHNNY DESTINY: SPACE NINJA, and a completely unauthorized take on CAPTAIN HARLOCK! Forget the cheap fakes at the flea market - come to this panel and find out about TRUE bootlegged anime!
Two solid hours of guaranteed mild amusement brought to you by puzzling anime shorts, confusing clips, improbable trailers, undeniably fake ads, disturbing educational films, commercials too stupid to live, and indescribable audio/visual things you never thought possible or necessary. Don't miss the special LIVE appearance of the star of "Robot King"!Our 8th year.
Space Battleship Yamato
The Japanese anime classic comes to the big screen in this 2010 live action big budget box office spectacular starring Takuya Kimura! Can the resurrected Space Battleship Yamato reach Iscandar in time to save the Earth? This screening features custom fan-made English subtitles.
Osamu Tezuka's Animation Legacy
Osamu Tezuka, the God Of Manga, produced over 150000 pages of manga in his lifetime. But when he wasn't drawing comics he was producing anime! Join Helen McCarthy and Dave Merrill as they take a look at the decades of animated TV and movies Tezuka produced, from Astro Boy to the Amazing Three, from Phoenix 2772 to Blue Blink, from Kimba The White Lion to Microid S, from Princess Knight to Jetter Mars, as well as experimental films, pilots, live-action series, weird failures, and offbeat hybrids of live action and animation. When did this guy sleep??
Mister Kitty's Stupid Comics
Take a penetrating look at the world of Stupid Comics with recognized Stupid Comics experts Shain and Dave from "misterkitty.org". Six decades of bad writing, sloppy draftsmanship, inept plots, confusing stories, and insulting characters all designed to separate children of all ages from their allowances will be paraded on the big screen for your amusment and derision. Special attention will be given to the misguided attempts of Westerners to appropriate the Japanese manga and anime styles!
Spooky Classic Anime
Take a spooky trip back in time with classic Japanese anime all about ghosts, monsters, spirits, haints, and spooks! Can the mythological folklore of a nation make the translation into black and white (and color!) scary cartoons in the 1960s and 70s? Is it true ghosts don't have to go to school? Are you brave enough to handle ultra-scary anime like GE GE GE NO KITARO, AKUMA-KUN, YOKAI NINGEN BEM, VAMPIRE, and DORORON ENMA-KUN? Sure you are.
TOTALLY LAME ANIME
Join Neil Nadelman as he opens his drawers and lets you in on all the unhealable deep-hurting examples of the rock-bottom worst the animation industry can try to offer your eyes. It's a carnival of terrible animation, ugly character design, confusing storylines, complete ripoffs, and other offenses against good taste and decency. Now in glorious 2D!
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Ponyrama!
Neil Nadleman discusses the popular franchiseAlong with clips, trailers and other surprises. All ages and Equine classes. Tell them Wilber sent you.
