Revised Autograph Policy
Monday, 16 May 2016 01:57
Beginning in 2016, all Guests at Anime North will have the option of charging for autographs. The convention does not require them to charge or set prices or sales targets. Anime North will not be taking any cut of autograph sales for itself, but we do ask that if guests sell autographs, a portion of the proceeds be donated to our charity, Sick Kids Hospital.
We cannot announce at this time which guests may choose to sell autographs, or how much they may charge. If any guest provides that info and asks us to share it with the public, we will.
There will still be guest panels and Q&As for congoers to enjoy seeing and interacting with all of our guests without paying extra.
Why Is This Happening?
This change is something the organizers of Anime North had hoped to avoid, but the nature of conventions, fandom, and the collectibles market has changed over the years since we first started. The rise of "comicons" and trade show media cons has created and fed a market for autographs. Throughout the convention world, charging for autographs has become expected.
In recent years, Anime North's reluctance to accept this change has begun to limit the selection of guests who we could attract. We have had many wonderful guests who are willing to provide free autographs, but in order to continue bringing in a wide range of popular guests that our attendees want to see, we must adapt.
On the personal front, guests are being asked to spend more and more time away from home to satisfy the fans by appearing at shows. Many guests who gave free autographs found them being resold online. Guests have the same need to make a living and pay bills that everyone else does and even when they do charge, that doesn't mean they no longer appreciate the love and support of their fans or that they are not happy to see them even when they choose not to buy an autograph.
